After pulling out of the Asian Championships, Australia’s under 19 national basketball team will not be competing in the World Cup in Hungary in 2023, Basketball great Andrew Gaze confirmed on SEN.

The news comes after the team announced it will not compete in the Asian Championships.

Because to FIBA’s decision to stage the tournament in Iran, both Australia and New Zealand withdrew from the Asian Cup in August.

Over concerns for the safety of its players, Basketball called off the Boomers’ World Cup qualifier against Iran, which was scheduled to take place on Tuesday. The spot for the World Cup has already been secured for the Boomers.

In spite of this, it is well knowledge that Australia’s under-19 team will not be able to compete in the World Cup if they do not win the Asian Championships.

According to an interview that Gaze gave on SEN’s The Run Home, “the Australian under 19 squad will not be playing in the under 19 world championship because of their unwillingness to travel to Iran for qualifying.”

At the 2021 World Cup, which was hosted in Latvia, Australia’s under-19 team finished without a medal.

The current recommendation from the government of Australia is that its citizens avoid traveling to Iran.
