COLOMBIA – The team that finished in third place overall at the third competition will move on to the next round as the third seed, behind Chinese Taipei and Japan.
When Colombia defeated Germany by a score of 7-0 on Tuesday, they clinched a berth for themselves in the Super Round of the IV WBSC Baseball World Cup. The victory was a must-win for Colombia.
The team that finished in third place at the most recent competition will move on to compete in the next round as the third seed in Group A, after the team that is currently ranked second in the world and ahead of the team that is currently ranked first in the world.
The scoring began for Colombia in the second inning, and they continued their success by scoring further runs in each of the following three innings.
In the bottom of the second inning, with one out and a runner on first, they were able to get to the starting pitcher for Germany, Samuel Steigert, when the designated hitter Jorge Puerta doubled deep to left center. After that, fielder Daniel Aguilar tried to score from first, but he was called out at home.
After an on-field review revealed that catcher Maurice Bendrien had never actually applied the tag, the call was overturned, and Colombia was awarded the run because of this. After that, the right fielder Roger Caraballo hit a double that drove in another run.
In the bottom of the third inning, third baseman Branlyn Jaraba drove in a run with a double, and then in the bottom of the fourth, Jair Camargo smacked a home slam off of reliever Joe De Leon to bring the Colombian total to three runs on four hits. A wild pitch in the fifth inning led to the scoring of an additional run.
After pitching five innings and surrendering only two hits, Santiago Florez was awarded the win for his performance.
The Super Round will begin with Colombia having a record of 0-2 in the competition.
