
At the Asian Boxing Championships 2022, which took place on Saturday in Amman, Jordan, Lovlina Borgohain defeated Valentina Khalzova of Kazakhstan, the 2016 world champion in the women’s 75 kilogram division, by a score of 3-2 in a split decision to storm her way into the semifinals of the competition.
The victory also ensured that the Indian boxer will take home at least a bronze medal from the competition that is now taking place. At the Asian Boxing Championships in 2017 and 2021, Lovlina Borgohain took home the bronze medal in each of those years.
In addition to Lovlina Borgohain, four more Indian boxers secured gold for their country by triumphing in the quarterfinals of their respective competitions.
In the quarterfinals of the women’s 63 kilogram division, World Championship bronze medalist Parveen defeated Panpatchara Somnuek of Thailand with a score of 5-0. Afterward, Ankushita Boro defeated Tsubata Arsia of Japan with a score of 5-0 in the women’s 66 kilogram division.
Minakshi of India, competing in the women’s 52-kilogram weight class, and Preeti of India, competing in the women’s 57-kilogram weight class, both made their first appearances in the competition and advanced to the semifinals by virtue of their victories over Irish Magno of the Philippines and Turdibekova Sitora of Uzbekistan, respectively.
Minakshi got off to a great start by unleashing a barrage of punches in the beginning of the fight. In the end, the Indian fighter was victorious over Magno with a score of 4-1.
Similarly to Minakshi, the 2021 Asian Youth Boxing champion Preeti had a spirited effort against Turdibekova Sitora, which resulted in a 5-0 victory for Preeti. Minakshi’s triumph came against Turdibekova Sitora.
In the semi-finals on November 9, Minakshi will now compete against Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg, Preeti will face off against Japan’s Irie Sena, and Parveen will go up against Mongolia’s Uranbileg Shinetsetseg. All three matches will take place in Japan.
In the opposite round of the quarterfinals, Sakshi (women’s 54kg) was defeated by Hsiao-Wen Huang of Chinese Taipei, who won the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Sakshi’s final score was 5-0. Pooja was defeated by Dariga Shakimova of Kazakhstan in the women’s 70-kilogram competition. The final score was 5-0.
On Sunday, the quarter-finals will feature competition from as many as seven Indian boxers. Among them are Mohammed Hussamuddin (57kg), who won a bronze medal at the CWG 2022, and Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), who has won five medals at the Asian Championships.
It has been announced that Simranjit Kaur, who won a bronze medal at the global championships in 2018, will compete again in 2019. Yeonji Oh of Korea, the defending champion of the Asian Games and a two-time winner of the continental title, will compete against the Olympian from Tokyo.
At the Asian Boxing Championships 2022, there will be a total of 267 boxers competing, representing 27 different countries.
