One year after winning the program’s first Olympic title in Tokyo, the US women’s volleyball team competed in the world championship and finished in fourth place overall.

In the match for the bronze medal on Saturday, Italy defeated the US in three straight sets, 25-20, 25-15, and 27-25. The United States was defeated by Serbia in the semifinals of their previous match.

After defeating Brazil in the championship game, Serbia successfully defended their title as world champions.

The World Championship of Volleyball is held every four years, much like the Olympic Games. Because of this, it is the single most important competition that takes place between the Tokyo and Paris Games. The US men’s team was eliminated from the quadrennial world championships in the quarterfinals one month ago.

Jordan Larson, who had stated prior to the Tokyo Games that she would retire from the national team afterward, and Foluke Akinradewo Gundersen, who came back from childbirth in November 2019 to make the Olympic team at the age of 33, were not on the roster for the US women’s team that competed in the world championships.

Instead, this team, once again coached by Olympic beach and indoor champion Karch Kiraly, was led on the attack by Ali Frantti, a 26-year-old making her first appearance at a global championship. Additionally, Tokyo Olympians Annie Drews and Jordyn Poulter led the team in scoring and setting going into the bronze-medal match.
